I’ve been having vivid dreams lately.  This is odd because I rarely dream.  In one of the dreams, this song played.  I wish I had remembered the dream in full.  When I went to search it, Woody Allen’s film “Manhattan” came up.  I’ve never seen it before, but like many of his films, the opening scene plays out like an open love letter to New York City.  The song is by George Gershwin. It’s titled “Rhapsody in Blue” and it’s quite famous. The story goes that he got the idea for the song by feeling the rhythm of a train ride, finding the music through the noise.  Its bombastic and cinematic and it dips and dives and it feels like you’re in a beautiful Metropolis during the 1920’s.  I want more days to feel like that.

On a side note: This whole blogging experience frustrates me.  Do I treat it like a journal?, Do I sum up my neurosis into nice truncated sentences? Have I used “truncated” appropriately? Should I care? Do they care? Who are they? Does the collective they include my Mom, cause if so…, If I don’t trust “they” then what is the point of sharing? I’ll share little pieces. Tiny little fragments of the tiniest fragments like leaving crumbs of bread to cover my tracks. One day I can look back on it and go “Wow, on ___ ___ __ (insert date) I quoted Nietzsche, what a pretentious, misguided schmuck I was (I’ve never actually done that, but if I did). No, I would rather not do that.  I think I’ve been watching too many Woody Allen films. All I know is that I’m happiest when I’m honest and communicative with the people I love the most. Anything short of that feels like the worst stomach ache of my life…here’s to my first official rant of 2012…may it be a year as beautiful as that song is to my ears.
